Security

It’s amazing how Scripture (in this case a song based on Scripture) can be seen differently in the midst of different circumstances.

God has taken me on a ride the past two years in my professional life.  In 2006 I began working for a Credit Union.  I never liked it but I put up with it because the job market wasn’t good and I was getting health benefits.  When it started getting really difficult to work there I heard this song by Aaron Shust called My Hope Is In You.  This is the chorus:

My hope is, in You Lord
All the day long
I won’t be shaken by drought or storm
A peace that passes understanding is my song
And I sing
My hope is in You, Lord

Listening to this song really helped me to be able to rise above the difficulties I was experiencing at work by remembering that God was there and that I could have peace in Him in the hard time I was facing.  I was let go from the Credit Union and again this song became my daily prayer as I lost my benefits and had no income.

Shortly afterward I was hired by a non-profit organization and really enjoyed the work I was doing.  I never really felt secure in my job because I felt like they did me a favor by hiring me- it was a little out of my expertise.  Recently I have been reexamining where my security lays.  A couple of Fridays ago, after feeling insecure, I asked God to help me remember that I didn’t need this job to feel secure but to know that my security is in what Christ did for me on the Cross.  A couple of hours later my boss called me into his office and he let me go due to downsizing.

Today I heard this song and saw it in a new light.  This time the words “My hope is in You, Lord” really stuck out to me.  It helped me to remember where my security is and that God will take care of me, my beautiful wife and brand new baby girl.  What refreshment to not have to worry!
